How to Break Out of the Frenzy Trap

How to Break Out of the Frenzy Trap How to Break Out of the Frenzy Trap Frenzy is one of the major obstacles preventing people from leading engaged, happy, and fulfilled lives personally and professionally. Between our increased workloads and the constant access we have to one another thanks to technology, were too busy to really connect in meaningful ways or take care of ourselves. As a result, we dont listen intently, pay attention to our peers, (genuinely) smile at our customers,or find the right kind of support.During Inspired Works leadership and engagement programs, we give participants a customized series of questions to answer at the beginning of every day. When people answer unterstellung questions, they start to find a greater sense of mission, vision, and purpose. The value of using these open-ended questions is they leave room for our own creativity and truth to step forward. This is why these questions are far more powerful than simple checklists one of the frenzy trap s for mid-managers.Here are a few example questionsWhat is todays ideal blend of strategic and tactical work?Who needs my attention, support, and praise? How can I best market my ideas? Initiatives? Agenda? How can I best take care of myself? What is the biggest problem I am ready to solve? How can I best expand my support system, inside and outside of the organization? When we consider our workday in the light of these questions,we can clarify for ourselves what is truly important and valuable in the day ahead. We become less likely toget caught up in the minutiae and more ready to articulate boundaries where necessary.Every workplace brings its own unique needs to the self-inquiry process. If you find yourself regularly overwhelmed, try answering these questions. It is one of the simplest ways to develop a stronger discipline in how you spend your time at work.David Harder is the founder ofInspired Work.

Employer Branding Plays a Lead Role in These Healthcare Stories for Good Reason

Employer Branding Plays a Lead Role in These Healthcare Stories for Good ReasonEmployer Branding Plays a Lead Role in These Healthcare Stories for Good ReasonEmployer Branding Plays a Lead Role in These Healthcare Stories for Good Reason Rossheimfruchtwein healthcare providers, whether theyre hospitals, rehabs and skilled nursing facilities, share a common recruiting goal theyre looking to persuade job candidates that its top priorities are patient-centered care, a supportive organizational culture and clinical innovation. That similarity tends to flatten what is otherwise an important message. Its very hard for these organizations to differentiate themselves, says Marcia Faller, Ph.D., RN, chief clinical officer for staffing firm AMN Healthcare. Their mission statements are very often the same.If youre wondering how your company can differentiate itself from the pack, we have the answer. The key to standing out is having a distinct and clearly-defined employer brandthats delivered to the right audience at just the right time, says Sean Broderick, VP of Employer Branding at Monster. We checked in with a number of healthcare organizations that are doing a great job of aligning their employer brands with core values, while managing to stand out with distinction. Their stories will help inform your companys own employer brandjourney.AMN brands its healthcare staffing business in more ways than oneAs one of the largest medical staffing firms in the country, AMN Healthcare meets the needs of hundreds of provider organizations. Thus the agency must project its own employer brand to job candidates in a very competitive talent marketas it helps clients project their own brands as healthcare employers. In filling thousands of requisitions for contract healthcare professionals, we move nurses and other clinicians around, so we need a national footprint, says Faller. It requires a robust brand message to qualified clinicians that focuses on the variety and volume of job oppo rtunities that the agency offers. To meet that need, social mediahas become the key medium for offering proof of the brand message to healthcare professionals, targeted by occupation. We track results for which social platforms work for each occupation that we staff, says Faller. Many of AMNs healthcare provider clients call on the firm to create absatzwirtschaft materials to help them promote their own brand to candidates. But the greatest branding potential that social media provides is in the conversations that healthcare professionals have about their employers. With social, its what people are saying about you thats most important, says Faller. Does the organization staff its facilities adequately? Is the culture supportive or toxic? Do doctors listen to nurses? All candidates want to know. With so much atstake, we monitor social sites and talk with clients about what we find, good or bad, says Faller. For larger clients, AMN also monitors company review sites. We report negative p osts to clients.Since entrants to the healthcare professions nearly all skew young, AMN customizes its approach to a younger point of view. We pay close attention to Millennialsand create short branding videos for clients, Faller says.Clover Health promises to address clinicians pain pointsAs a preferred provider organization, Clover Health must project its employer brand to multiple talent pools, and clinicians are one of the most important audiences to reach.A lot of our clinicians are nurse practitioners and physicians, and they didnt go to school to do paperwork, says Rachel Fish, chief administrative officer at Clover Health. For Fish, streamlined processesfrom charting to care coordinationare a key element of the Clover brand. As part of their brand strategy, Clover emphasizes sending its own clinicians to see patients in their homes to provide high-quality healthcare, thus avoiding preventable hospital admissions and other unnecessary utilization. Our clinicians are not compens ated by the number of home visits they make, so they can spend time in patients homes, says Fish. This distinction is important to the doctors, nurses and medical assistants that make these house calls, and to job candidates, adds Fish.Additionally, Clover chats with clinical candidates about the organizations IT structure. Engineers work side-by-side with clinicians to reduce the frustration of complex electronic health records with the goal of making them more user-friendly.Clover takes an analytical approach to its investment in media for employer branding. The organizations marketers have concluded that not all social platforms are created equal, and many are not worth the necessary resources, even if theyre free. We havent found Instagram or Twitter to be very productive, Fish notes.Meanwhile, old-school legacy media, which has fallen out of fashion with employers in some industries, has a logical place in Clovers employer branding and marketing strategy. Nurse practitioners ar e in the car all the time, so were actually going to be running some billboards and bus shelter ads, says Fish.Providence St. Joseph lends its brand to a pipeline universityIt turns out that a healthcare ordnungsprinzip can make a big splash with its employer branding, simply by changing its name. With 50 hospitals, 829 clinics, 20,000 doctors and 38,000 nurses in the West and Southwest,Providence St. Joseph Health (PSJH) is one of the largest healthcare ordnungsprinzips in the nation. Given the predicted tidal wave of retirements over the next decade, PSJH must hire four times as many nurses per year in 2028 as they do currently.Recruiters and candidates took notice last year when PSJH announced that the 1,000-student University of Great Falls in Montana would be renamed the University of Providence. The name change encompasses the new educational and training programs for a range of healthcare careers and a pipeline to jobs at Providence St. Joseph and other facilities. It was part of our strategic vision to have a fantastic university as part of our healthcare system and to brand PSJH as a leader in clinical training and education, says Carol Kubeldis, vice president of talent acquisition. The new name points to the advantage of having an integrated health system with its own university. As recruiters talk to nurses about coming to PSJH, they can highlight tuition-subsidized certification programs and a broad range of professional developmentoptions. The university also serves directly as an internal recruitment pipeline for the health system, Kubeldis says. Each of these stories demonstrates theeffectiveness ofa strategically-delivered employer brand message, whether the end goal is to attract and retain top quality talent or to create a better match for clients. The perfect blend of impactful employer branding content, rapidly and accessibly deployed across multi-channel digital and social platforms, helps employers create extraordinary candidate experiences a nd better recruitment outcomes, says Broderick.By developing your own employer brand message, you can communicate your companys unique value proposition to clients and candidates. Soon, youll be standing out from the crowdfor all the right reasons.

IbuprofenAccording toGoodRx, the average retail price of Ibuprofen is about $13.89. If youre constantly reaching for personenname brand bottles like Advil or Motrin, you could save bybuying the generic brandinstead. The ingredients are often exactly the same, yet name brands often mark u p the price by15 to 30 percent. So if youre tired of overpaying for no reason, talk to a pharmacist and find the cheaper brand thats right for you.Pro tipGoodRxhas a ton of coupons that you can quickly download to save on both over-the-counter and prescription medicines.2. Laundry DetergentLike ibuprofen, name brands often mark up their prices on laundry detergent, so you might be overpaying on those bottles and pods. To save, buy in bulk at awholesale club store like Costcoor on Amazon, and always use a coupon. Even better, consider making your own laundry detergentat home to save over 25 cents per load.3. ToothbrushesLets be real - paying for a toothbrush could be one of the biggest wastes of money ever. If youre good about going to the dentist at least two times per year, then you should be getting a free toothbrush every six months. Even though you should really be swapping it outevery three months or so, only needing to buy two toothbrushes per year instead of four can help sav e you money.Pro tip Ask your dentist for two free toothbrushes at your six-month checkup to save even mor.4. WineIts no secret that wine by the glass at a restaurant is often insanely overpriced. In fact, it can bemarked up 400 percentper glass compared to the price youd pay if you bought the bottle yourself at a store or from a distributor. Save by buying wine in bulkandthen bringing it to a BYO restaurant.5. ElectricityWhile it may not feel like it, youre most likely overpaying for your electricity. From leavingenergy vampiresplugged in to forgetting to turn off the light when you leave a room, it can add up. Simply upgrading toLED bulbs, smart plugs and other techcan save you hundreds of dollars over the next several years.6. JewelryDiamonds can costbetween 50 and 200 percent morethan their wholesale prices, so be prepared to drop a pretty penny at that jewelry store. MakeupThat concealer you love could actually be worth78 percentless than youre paying for it. Makeup is often marked up a lot and it might not always be worth it. So dont hesitate to try lesser-known, budget-friendly brands that may have the same ingredients in them and stock up on free samples.8. BooksIt really onlycosts a few bucks to print a book, so paying full price for a brand new paperback could be a total ripoff. Instead, sign up for your local library and pay nothing to read the latest work from your favorite author. If youre more of a digital person, Amazon offers a ton of e-books for a third or less of what theyd cost in print.9. Clothes And ShoesDesigner jeans can often be marked upmore than 80 percentfrom what it actually costs to make them, while sneakers might only cost$15 to makewhen theyre sold for $70 or more. Save money on both clothes and shoes by shopping sample sales, usingChrome extensi onsfor the best coupons or evenbuying items gently used.10. ProduceYour local grocery store might be ripping you off by marking up the prettiest produce byas much as 75 percent. Yep, people will pay more for the prettiest produce, while the oddly-shaped rejects can be bought for50 percent off. Save by seeking out the ugly fruits and veggies. If you cant find them, ask the manager. There might be budget-friendly bananas in the backPro tip Dont even think about going for the pre-cut stuff. Its even more overpriced11. CardsIf youve gone to the store to buy a birthday, anniversary, graduation or greeting card lately, then youre well aware that they arent cheap. Cards can often cost upwards of $6 even without the fancy music playing from them. So head to the dollar store instead, where you can end up paying at least 80 percent less on one card. Before buying anything, do your research to see what it actually costs to produce it and then what the average retail price is at the store. You c ould save a lot of money by buying items with smaller profit margins and lower markups. However, not every item will have a more budget-friendly option for sale, sostick to couponingand shopping with a smart strategy, too. This article originally appeared on Swirled. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from jngste Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Remote Job Search 5 Red Flags to Look Out For

Remote Job Search 5 Red Flags to Look Out For Remote Job Search 5 Red Flags to Look Out For If you’ve been looking for a while for a remote job opportunity, or if you need to switch to a remote job quickly for whatever reason, it can be tempting to take the first offer that comes along. Finding a reliable remote job can be tricky- especially if you’re searching outside of a company that you’ve already worked for and established a reputation with. Here are five common red flags to look out for when it comes to your remote job search: 1. They want you to use your own equipment. If youre a remote worker who is an employee on staff with a particular company, it should be providing you with all the technology necessary to get your job done well. This might include things like a company computer, access to the company’s private network, an email account, etc. If the company that’s interested in having you work remotely for them doesn’t offer those things, it could be a red flag. Even if the company is a legit place to work, working for a place that can’t afford to supply its employees with the proper equipment will likely pose some very real challenges, which is something to consider. 2. They want to pay you through a weird system. When you’re working a legitimate remote gig with an established company, it should be able to pay you on a regular basis, and that payment should come in a traditional method, most likely through direct deposit to your bank account. If a particular company is trying to do something different- like payment through wire transfers or through an alternative payment system such PayPal- it doesn’t necessarily mean you should run the other way, but it is worth looking into more seriously. 3. You can’t find much about the company online. While it’s possible that the company you’re looking into is totally brand new and doesnt have much by way of brand recognition yet (in the world of startups, this could be very likely), there should at least be something available online for you to do some research. Start by checking with the Better Business Bureau and Chamber of Commerce for potential scams. 4. They’re asking for a lot of personal information up front. You likely already know this, but it’s worth repeating- no legit organization will ask you for personal information before you get into the job offer phase. If you’re interviewing for a position and you’ve been asked to provide details like your home address, bank information, or social security number- all before your first follow-up phone call- run, don’t walk, away. 5. You just dont feel right about it. There’s a lot to be said about your intuition in situations like these. If you’ve had multiple phone calls (because they can never meet in person), email correspondence has come back with one too many typos (at the very least, this is never a good sign of professionalism), or you just get a strange feeling based on limited information, it’s always best to keep looking. If you’re not sure how to get started finding legitimate remote job opportunities, created a downloadable guide that is chock-full of helpful and useful information. Tips for Asking for Time Off at the Holidays

Tips for Asking for Time Off at the Holidays Tips for Asking for Time Off at the Holidays For many of us, the holiday season is a period of time we want to spend with friends and family, without having to worry about responsibilities related to work. The trouble is, though, that many of your colleagues have the same idea. Add the fact that some people are in fields where work must continue through the holidays, and you have a tricky challenge to negotiate. Almost everyone would love to have some extra time off during the busy holiday season. Employers have to juggle requests in order to keep employees happy and to make sure that the workload is covered. It can be a challenging time of year to ask for - and get - extra time off from work, especially when youre working for an organization that is busy during the holiday season. Tips for Asking for Time Off at the Holidays Whats the best way to ask to take vacation or personal leave? When you want to take time off for the holidays, its important to be flexible, to be willing to give as well as to get, to plan to ask early, if possible, and to be able to offer solutions for getting your work covered, if necessary, while youre away. Here are tips for successfully asking for time off from work during the holiday season. Know What Time Off You Have Available Before you ask for holiday time off, check your vacation or personal leave allotment  to be sure you have the time  available to use. Also find out if your company has a use it or lose it vacation policy, which could mean you have to take days off from work prior to the end of the calendar or fiscal year or forfeit them. Check company policy to see if there are guidelines for requesting time off, and be sure you comply  with them. The information should be available in your companys employee handbook or website. Ask Sooner Rather Than Later Strategies for handling this holiday dilemma will vary given your situation. However, the earlier to you ask, the more likely you will be to get your request approved.  If you are in a sector like retail, hospitality, IT, or healthcare, where coverage must be maintained, then you may need to discuss scheduling with both your manager and your co-workers. One approach is to prioritize your holiday preferences as far in advance as possible and to bring the issue up for discussion with bosses and colleagues. The earlier you raise the topic, the better, and although being the first one to ask for time off doesnt necessarily guarantee that your request will be granted, it does give you more leeway with your negotiation. Be Ready to Compromise Be understanding and patient when asking for time off. Kindness will go a long way. You should also spend some time thinking about how you can best compromise if your request isnt granted in full. For example, if your family gets together on Christmas Eve, then you might volunteer to work on Christmas so you can take off the day before.  If you have colleagues who celebrate Jewish or Islamic holidays, then you might volunteer to work those days in exchange for coverage on Christmas or New Years Day. Another approach is to explore the possibility of splitting shifts on holidays. For example, you might offer to cover 6 am to 12 pm, or 12 pm to 6 pm, instead of your typical 12-hour shift. Plan in Advance If continuous coverage is not an issue in your field, then advance planning can be the best way to clear time off for the holidays. Anticipate deadlines that occur around the holidays, and set your own deadline for December 15th to make sure you get the work done before the holiday period.   Sharing your plan to work extra hours or do whatever is necessary to clear the holidays with your supervisor and team members well in advance can help alleviate any concerns. Raising this issue with your work team well in advance can also help you to avoid preemptive requests from aggressive fellow employees. When you submit your request for time off, be sure to convey to your supervisors how you plan to ensure all of your responsibilities will be taken care of before you leave for your vacation.

Cover Letter Writing 101

Cover Letter Writing 101 Cover Letter Writing 101 Is the cover letter dead? While most job candidates would love the answer to be a resounding “yes,” that’s just not the case. Hiring managers still rely on cover letters to learn more about the job seekers they’re considering interviewing. Yet, if you’re like many job candidates, writing a cover letter is a struggle. You’re not sure what to say, how to say it, and which details are going to make you stand out the most to potential employers. That’s where the cover letter writing experts at ResumeSpice come in. Below are some tips and tricks from our team to help you craft a quality letter that gets noticed: Start with research Before beginning the writing process, do some research. Learn all you can about the company, including its services, customers, mission and vision. When you have a solid understanding of what they do and who they serve, you’ll be able to demonstrate relevant examples of the value you can offer. After some leg work you’ll also gain a better sense of the tone you should be using in your letter. For instance, if you’re applying to work in a more formal, corporate setting, then you’ll want to be more conservative with your language. Make a memorable opening statement Avoid the “I am applying for the position of ABC analyst.” This simply wastes valuable real estate on the page and does nothing to convince a hiring manager of your worth. Instead, stand out with a strong opening statement. Talk about what grabbed your attention about the job or what excites you about the company. When a hiring manager has read through dozens of cover letters with the same opening statement â€" and yours offers a fresh and interesting perspective â€" you’ll differentiate yourself in a big way. Show the value you can offer. Hiring managers want to get to know candidates who have a solid track record of achievements. It’s therefore smart to offer relevant examples of a problem you helped solve, a successful project you initiated and completed, and any other results you were able to deliver in past positions. Demonstrate enthusiasm. Many times, hiring managers are used to seeing dry or boilerplate cover letters from job candidates. That’s why a little energy and enthusiasm can go a long way in helping to set yourself apart. So talk about why you want the job and what about the company stands out to you. For instance, “I read your company blog daily and would be thrilled to be a part of an organization known for setting industry standards.” Writing a cover letter can be a daunting task for many job seekers. If you would like professional help with the process, connect with the cover letter writing experts at ResumeSpice. We will learn about your background, experience, and accomplishments to help you produce a winning letter that showcases why you’re uniquely qualified. Call 832.930.7378 today to learn more.

Are You Unemployed and Happy or Employed and Miserable

Are You Unemployed and Happy or Employed and Miserable Unemployed and Happy or Employed and Miserable? Are You Unemployed and Happy or Employed and Miserable Ihear and read stories about people who feel miserable in their jobs, but can't risk quitting in today's job market. Some who have held onto their jobs are even expressing envy toward those who have been laid off. It reminds me of a line from an old TV drama about an impending nuclear attack: The living will envy the dead. That's a bit melodramatic, but it does seem highly ironic to be jealous of someone who's collecting unemployment while you're drawing a steady paycheck. Still, there's enough misery among the employed that I'm sure some of them have wished for their own layoffs. (You mean I don't have to put up with this miserable job anymore and can sleep in?!? Excellent!!) Even the optimists among the still-employed may be more apt to ride out the recession before they look for new jobs. Based on the results of a recent survey, 54% of employed adults in North America are at least somewhat likely to look for new jobs once the economy turns around. That's understandable if: (1) They didn't like their jobs or companies even before the recession struck but feel they need to stay put until job prospects improve, or (2) They wound up working more hours and spending less time with their families after they took on more work following a round or two of layoffs. Meanwhile, there's no shortage of stuff on the web that says how being laid off can be an incredibly exhilarating experience that gives you time to recharge yourself, learn something new, spend more time with the family, and, heck, maybe even win a Nobel Prize. In 2002, during my own 7-month-long layoff, I did all that (except the Nobel part), and while it kept my spirits up, the depressing feeling of being jobless didn't go away. It's an awful feeling, even if it lasts for only minutes. Trust me, you don't want it. All this led me to wonder how people are faring in this recession. If you're employed, how are things at work? If you're unemployed and looking for a job, what are you doing to stay focused and optimistic amid your job search?

Inspiration 5 Career Transition Success Stories

Inspiration 5 Career Transition Success Stories Inspiration 5 Career Transition Success Stories When you’re in college or trade school working on your major, your vision of life after school is pretty clear: you’ll get a job in your major and make a decent salary until you retire. However, in real life, it looks a lot more like Dr. Seuss’s “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” with surprise layoffs, changes of heart and new opportunities. To give you an idea of how common (and surprising) career transitions can be, here’s a look at four unconventional transition stories.   Editor to Marketing Specialist This first one is mine, and then I’ll share some others. I’ve made several successful transitions in my career, but one of the most significant was from my position as an editor for a government contracting company to a marketing and content specialist at a marketing agency. There was some overlap between these word-based careers, but I believe what made me stand out as an applicant was my blogging hobby. In my spare time I started a website and learned about grassroots social media marketing and blogging. When I went in for the interview I was able to share first-hand experience about how I maintain a social media calendar and editorial calendar as well as basics about search engine optimization. Investing my personal time in professional skills paid off. Accountant to Personal Coach Chrysta Bairre started her career in administration and bookkeeping. With continued hands-on training she became an Accounting Manager for an accounting services firm, providing high level accounting, forecasting and budgeting services. After 20 years on the job she found herself  overworked, overwhelmed and overstressed. Her health was suffering and she realized she needed to make some significant changes in her life. She started a work-life balance blog to explore finding peace and happiness in her work and her life. Friends, family and co-workers started asking her for advice about work and life, and she gave it. People kept telling her, You should do this for a living! Eventually it sunk in that maybe she really could. That’s when she launched a full-time personal coaching business Live Love Work.   “Look for ways to transfer your skills to a different career,” says Bairre. “For example, my skill of analyzing information and understanding complex systems helps me see the heart of the challenges my Confidence Coaching clients are facing so I can help them recognize and communicate their value in their work and their life. Its never too late to live the life you desire, and have the career to match!” Math Teacher to Food Blogger Marla Sarris started her career as a seventh-grade math teacher. Six years later she realized it wasn’t the lifestyle for her, and she made the leap to food blogger and author of “Pigskin Paleo,”  a recipe book of game-day Paleo snacks. She also took on work as a project manager for her husband’s web design business SPYR. Speaking about her transition on Life After Teaching, Sarris said, “If you’re not enjoying what you’re doing… find a way to make that happen. Change is hard, and it takes a lot of work, but if you’re willing to put in the time and make a change for the better then you can and should do it.” Professional Dance Artist to Accountant and CEO In a recent Simply Hired post, Mathew Heggem shared his career transition from dance artist and choreographer to accountant. Along the way he discovered several uncharacteristic similarities between dancing and performing and being a CEO. “Discovering the overlap between the outputs of dance and accounting paved the way for me to effectively take on a CEO role.” said Heggem. “I choreograph the dynamics of my business to achieve a desired output and experience for my customer, and I work with the ‘dancers’ of my company to provide an experience that delivers not only meaningful and compliant financial systems but also a branded customer experience.” Architect to Professional Chef Chef Larry Keck  wasn’t always a chef, though he has been involved in the restaurant industry since the age of 14. After earning a Bachelor’s in Arts in Architecture, he took a job as an architect. After six months he knew the career wasn’t a fit for him. “Working chained to a desk didn’t feed my creative, people-loving side,” he said. “I knew the money would improve over time if I stuck with it, but I didn’t want to work every day at a job that I didn’t want to do.” Stepping into the restaurant world as a chef, Keck knew he found the career he was supposed to have. “I’ve been doing this for 42 years, and for 35 of those years I haven’t had a ‘job.’ Every day is playtime. I come into the kitchen and create, play and build. Life is so short. Why waste it in a career that doesn’t feed you? Don’t find a job you can do and that’s that. Find a job that inspires you to do your best every single day.” If you find yourself struggling with your current field of work or daydreaming about a new job, you might be on the verge of a career transition. Consider the advice from these successful transitioners and apply it to your situation to pursue the job you’re meant to have.

3 Career Moves to Make Before You Turn 45

3 Career Moves to Make Before You Turn 45 3 Career Moves to Make Before You Turn 45 When you’re in your teens and 20s, the path to success seems relatively straightforward: work on your skill set, graduate from college, get a killer job, and move your way up the corporate ladder. But what happens during the second phases of your career? What type of moves should you make in your 30s and 40s? And what do you do if your interests have changed over the years? Whether you feel like you’re walking on air or unsettled, during your 30s and 40s you need to start making a name for yourself. To help you do just that, here are three career moves to make before 45 that will kick your career into high gear. 1. Start Taking Risks If you’ve been working in the same field for a while, you’ve undoubtedly acquired a lot of knowledge and you’re very capable of making a lot of well-informed decisions. Yes, that means you’re allowed to give yourself a pat on the back. But it doesn’t mean you don’t have more to learn. So start conversing with colleagues, be more active in your field, and learn all that you can. There’s always more to learn, especially if you made a significant career change like switching from advertising to politics, for example. When you were in your 20s, it was easy to lay back and follow orders, but now that you’re older it’s essential for you to put yourself out there. If you’re an expert in your field, it’s time to start demonstrating your expertise (without losing your job, of course). In other words, don’t be afraid to speak up and be more assertive. To grow in your industry, think about taking on new projects that challenge you. Don’t take on the same projects you’ve done year after year, but instead focus on new endeavors where your talents can shine. Trying your hand at new projects and putting yourself out there in other ways will help you demonstrate your capabilities to your coworkers. And if your company doesn’t feel like you’re ready for specific projects, don’t take “no” for an answer. You can prove your talents without stepping on toes. If everything goes as planned, taking the initiative will show your manager and boss you’re willing to put yourself out there and help the company succeed. But if for some reason your hard work doesn’t pay off regardless of the extensive knowledge you have in your field, then it may be time to apply for a new job. You can also consider taking a step back at the company you work for until the right opportunity comes along. 2. Think About Getting a Business Degree It may not be necessary for you to go back to school to get an MBA, but if this is something you’d like to do there’s no time like the present. An advanced degree can benefit you in several ways: It’ll show your superiors you’re willing to work hard and be the very best in your field. You’ll have time to study, focus, and experiment with ideas that you usually wouldn’t have time to do otherwise. In an MBA program, for example, you’ll have a lot of time to reflect on the future of the business and how you can help improve it. Ultimately, your newfound knowledge will help you work your way up the ladder. If you continue to work while getting an advanced degree, it won’t be easy, but it’ll be worth it. After all, there’s no better time to go back to school; it will only improve your career and hopefully raise your salary, too. 3. Reach Out to a Recruitment Firm You might enjoy your current job, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t connect with other people at a recruitment agency. You never know if another opportunity may be a better fit for you unless you reach out to them with your resume. When you contact them, tell them about yourself, what you do, and what your career aspirations are. Forming a connection with a new firm is an excellent way to network.
